Kevin Haney is the manager of the Murray County Amateur radio team of Murray County. There are 12 volunteer members in all with different skills and backgrounds. Some having medical backgrounds ranging from EMTs to nurses and paramedics.

The team does uses a radio to transmit information throughout an area in emergency situations.

Amateur radio has been used for over 100 years and is not anything new. The way that it is being used, however, has changed since the past. When cell phones, landline phones, and other forms of communication are down and out, radio signals are able to transmit information without infrastructure.

An example of such situations would be that of hurricane Katrina. All phones were inactive and there needed to be a form of communication between teams to recieve information. Amateur radio was the way to go about it. Also, it was used during 9/11 and other emergancy situations.

In order to operate an amateur radio, training is offered in Murray County, but depending on the level you want to work at, training gets longer and harder. There are three classes, technician, general and extra.
