Nine area young people recently participated in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) Youth Gathering in New Orleans, designed to helping rebuild the city after Hurricane Katrina and provide fun and fellowship.

“There were 37,000 Lutherans in New Orleans” during the gathering, said Missy Raverty of Heron Lake, one of the chaperones. Some of the valuable lessons of the trip, according to Raverty, were helping others any way possible, learning not to judge others, and realizing that natural disasters can happen any time, any where. She also said the youth had a lot of fun, got to meet a variety of different people from all over the country, and had opportunity to grow their faith through worship, devotions, attending concerts and listening to speakers. Raverty felt that the nightly gatherings in the Superdome including various speakers and music were the most inspirational part of the trip.

Raverty’s group attend ELCA churches in Heron Lake, Amo, Fulda, and rural Worthington which are part of the Prairie Star Ministries, sharing pastors and activities. Raverty’s son Cody Malcolm, and Jennifer Schmidt, Heron Lake Lutheran Churc, Rochelle Meyer, Amo Lutheran Church, and Emily Barritt, Haley Baumhoefner, Abigail Hubbling, Tessa Kremer, Jared Mitchell, Sabrina Raddle, Fulda Lutheran Church. Raverty and Rev. Don Short, interim pastor at the Heron Lake Lutheran Church along with his wife Anna served as the chaperones. Raverty said the youth group began having monthly meetings last winter to prepare for the trip and plan and carry out fundraisers. Some of the fundraisers were a soup and pie supper, rummage sale, selling fruit, a supper auction in Dundee, offerings at church, and collecting donations. The youth group also paid $50 per person to register for the trip. Click on the button to the right to subscribe to our on-line paper and view the rest of this story.
