Cardboard Box City Coming to Fulda

October 1, 2009

by Norma Dittman
Fulda City Park will become the site for a Cardboard Box City on Saturday, October 10th. Your mission: Plan now to spend one night in a cardboard box to raise awareness and money to help eliminate family homelessness in southwestern Minnesota!

During the Cardboard Box City, homeless supporters will camp one night in a temporary dwelling made out of cardboard. Monies raised during the event will be donated to Western Community Action and Southwestern Minnesota Opportunity Council for their Emergency Homeless Prevention Funds.

Cardboard Box Cities are organized by Catholic Charities. Monies are raised by “residents” of the Cardboard Box City who pay “rent” by obtaining sponsorship pledges from family, friends, and neighbors. The suggested rent amount per person is $100.00. “Rent” is due by Monday, October 5th. Please send registration forms and money to Nichole Paladie, Parish and Community Social Action Coordinator, P.O. Box 802, Catholic Charities, Worthington, MN 56187

Participants in Cardboard Box City have a few rules that they will need to follow:

•NO food or beverage may be brought into the event. If any is brought in, it will be considered a donation to the local food shelf.

•No pets are allowed

•No electronics are allowed

On October 10th, participants in the Cardboard Box City event will meet at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church. Father Jeffrey Dobbs will perform a “Sending Out” blessing. Arrival and set-up time at Fulda City Park will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Participants will supply their own dwellings - a box (or a tent). Dwellings can be anything you can carry in, and you must take it with you when you leave. (Don’t forget to prepare for rain!) The event is rain or shine (remember, the homeless don’t have a choice!). A sleeping bag, pillow, and card games may also be brought along.

People of all faith are welcome to participate in Cardboard Box City. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a chaperone who is 21 years of age or older.

Live entertainment will be on-stage from 6 - 10 p.m. There will be speakers who will talk about the crisis services that they work in and how homelessness affects individuals and families. A scavenger hunt will be held with participants looking for homeless facts throughout Fulda City Park.

There will also be a Box Decorating Competition complete with prizes. Cardboard Box City residents are encouraged to decorate their “homes.” Judging will be done by area pastors who will walk through the Cardboard Box City at various times throughout the night.

A soup kitchen will be available all night.

Take down of Cardboard Box City is scheduled for 6-8 a.m. on Sunday morning, October 11th.

Cardboard Box Cities were held in Brewster and Adrian, MN, during 2008. More than 120 people participated in the event, raising over $5,000 to be donated to help the homeless.

Several businesses from Fulda will be taking part in this year’s Cardboard Box City.
