Carl Richter is a 16 year old from Essen, Germany, who is studying as a senior this year at Fulda High School. Essen is located in the western part of Germany.

Richter’s family consists of his dad, Norbert Richter, mom Bettena Peuse-Richter, and older brother, Paul, age 18. Norbert is a quality manager for Pioneer Electronics.

Richter chose Education First (EF) as the company to go through for his year of foreign study. “My brother, Paul, did an exchange experience two years ago. He went to Texas. He said that I should do the exchange study program because he had learned so much and it was a good experience,” Richter said, explaining his choice of coming to the United States to study for this year.

For his flight to come to the United State, Richter boarded an airplane in Dusseldorf, Germany. He flew to London, England, and then to Denver, Colorado, before landing at the Sioux Falls, SD, Airport. “It was about twenty hours all together,” Richter commented. “I was met at the Sioux Falls Airport by Arlan and Linda Swanson, who are my host parents. Their son, Luke, did not come along as it was after midnight on August 19th when I got here, and he had an early appointment the next morning.”

Richter got to meet his American host family about two weeks before he came to the United States. They sent photos and emails back and forth in an attempt to get to know a bit about one another.

At Viktoria School in Essen, Germany, Richter is in the 11th grade. The school day begins at 8 a.m. and goes until 1:30 p.m., when the students are excused to go home for lunch and have some tme to participate in other activities. “We do not have lunch in school,” Richter stated. “We go home and have our lunch there. Most of our travel is by public transportation back and forth to school.”

Subjects that he studies in Germany include math, the German language, the English language, the Spanish language, physics, biology, music and physical education.

At Fulda High School, Richter is taking statistics, Spanish, Algebra II, band, American History, and World Literature. He has a study hall every day. He plays drums in the Fulda High School band.

Richter also played football this fall.

For fun, when he is in Germany, Richter likes to be outside. “Football is not very popular in Germany, but soccer is, and we play soccer a lot, ” he shared. “I like having people around and being able to do fun things with friends...like playing video games. ” He enjoys the same type of activities at Fulda...being outdoors, and getting together with friends.

Last weekend, the Swanson family and Richter went to Minneapolis for an exchange student get-together. “We went to the Mall of America. That was fun,” Richter said.

During the months that Richter is living in the United States, the Swanson family are making plans to take a trip to Chicago, Illinois. They are also hoping to be able to make sure that Richter gets to see Mount Rushmore.

Richter’s city in Germany has a population of over 500,000. Living in a rural area is a bit different for him, but he said, “Rural living is not so bad. I am enjoying the experience so far and I think that my English language is better than when I first came.”
