Many Fulda veterans took the invitation that was extended to them during last Wednesday’s Veterans Day Program to introduce themselves to the audience and share what branch of service they were in and where they were stationed during their period of service.
The program was planned through cooperative efforts by members of the community, the FCCLA team of Nate Fremstad, Brock Baumgarn, Max Dibble, and Chang Gatchay, and the Fulda Schools.
Pre-program music was provided by the Fulda High School Band, under the direction of Mike Peterson. The band opened the program by playing the National Anthem.
Third grade elementary students, guided by teacher Linda Beerman, led the Pledge of Allegiance, read many facts about the American flag and then sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
Reverand Ken Honius, American Legion Post 318 Chaplin, gave both the invocation and the benediction.
“Our Flag” was sung by the Fulda Elementary School choir under the direction of Carolyn Beerman.
“Who Is A Veteran” was the title of a play presented by seventh grade students Taylor Kenney, Marissa Kunerth, Katlyn Glenn, and Anna Winter.
The play was followed by the Fulda High School Band playing Irving Berlin’s “Songs for America.”
Each elementary class had issued special invitation to one or two veterans to be their guest(s) for the program. Those special guests were introduced by members of each elementary class. Following their introduction to the audience, Karmel Holinka’s fourth grade students presented each veteran with a small American Flag. Doc Schwarz was the Kindergarten class’ guest. Marv Schreiber and Burdell Christians were the second grade class’ guests. Third grade students had invited Tracee Crowley and Brenda Sauer to be their special guests. Ken Honius was the special guest of the fourth grade class. Jerry Johnson and Earl Halverson were special guests of the fifth grade classes. Roger Gustin was the special guest who was invited by the sixth graders.
Following the introduction of the special guests, several area veterans introduced themselves to the audience. Jim Croache, Gregg Slautthaug, Willis Beckman, Tom Lubben, Rich Gilbertson, Fritz Heger, Don Kolander, Joe Hammerschmidt, Walter Ruesch, Rodney Wahl, Bill Fuerstenberg, Marlin Bultmann, Ed Reusse, Heinie Magnus, Bill Sauer, Chuck Holinka, Linus Dardis, Gene Winter, Jr. Czepa, and Harold Gerdes each shared a brief history of their service time.
Several veterans were presented with a copy of the Veteran Memories DVDs that contain interviews with several of Fulda’s military veterans. The DVDs were created in 2004 and are a part of the Library of Congress Project for Retention of Veterans Military History.
Singing acapella, Lloyd Winter presented Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.” His solo had the audience on their feet as he sang “I’ll proudly stand up next to you and defend Her still today.”
Kirsten Pagel played “Taps” which was followed by Cannoneer Steve Webb talking about Fulda’s 3-inch ordance rifle and the firing of the rifle that took place on the parking lot of Fulda High School immediately following the 2009 Veterans Day Program. Fulda’s Cannoneers fired three rounds to honor all area veterans. |
