Walter (Pete) RienerBruns was born on July 8, 1923 on the family farm near Avoca, Minnesota to Henry and Jesse Ebbinga Bruns. Pete was Baptist and Confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. In 1940 Pete went to work as a hired man for Albert Kirchner. In March 1945 Pete enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan. Following his discharge in February 1947 Pete returned to the Fulda area and continued working for Albert Kirchner. In 1953 Pete moved to Raymond, South Dakota and purchased a farm. In 1970 he retired from faming and moved to Minneapolis, MN where he drove delivery truck and worked as a bartender. In 1986 Pete moved to Slayton and worked at the Bruns Elevator in Iona. Pete then worked as a hired man for area farmers. On January 11, 2010, Pete became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton and passed away there on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the age of 86. Pete was one of the founding members of the Wirock Saddle Club. He was a member of the Iona VFW Post #9680. Pete enjoyed going out for coffee and visiting with friends, fishing, horses and farming.
Survivors include three brothers and one sister, Dick Bruns and his wife, Lucille of Walnut Grove, MN, George Bruns of Fulda, MN, Fannie Bruns of Fulda, MN, Harry Bruns and his wife, Shirley of Brookings, SD, two sisters-in-law, Gertie Bruns of Slayton, MN, and Fern Bruns of Worthington, MN and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Theodore Bruns, Henry Bruns and his wife, Violet, Reiner Bruns, Andrew Bruns, Jesse Bruns and his wife, Agnes, three sisters, Rena Koehn and her husband, Elmer, Grace Wildfeuer and her husband, Bert, and Leona Bruns.
Funeral Services at Christ Lutheran Church Slayton, MN on Monday, January 25, 2010 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Craig Nissen officiating. The organist was LaDean Lang. The pallbearers were Brian Crowley, Darrel Bruns, Steve Halbur, Larry Leysen, Jim Surprenant and Roger Wildfeuer. Honorary pallbearers were Dale Pavlis, Walter Muecke and the Iona VFW Post. Interment is at Slayton Memorial Gardens, Slayton, MN. Military honors accorded by the Iona VFW Post #9680.
