Several new children’s and adult books have been added recently to Fulda Memorial Library through a donation made in memory of Harold and Ardith Busch by their children. The books have been on display near the entrance to the library.
One June 29, 2009, Harold and Ardith were involved in a car accident near Heron Lake, MN. Harold passed away the day following the accident and Ardith passed away on July 3rd. Because both Harold and Ardith were frequent patrons at Fulda Memorial Library, their cildren donated a portion of the memorial funds the family received to the library. “Our family was inundated with cards and memorials. There was an amazing outpouring of symphathy and kindness from the residents of the community and surrounding area. As a family, we wanted to give something back to the residents of the area, so we donated the memorial moneys to various organizations that mom and dad had been involved with,” the Busch’s daughter, Carol Naumann stated. “My brothers and I designated where the money was given to and the organizations were told to chose how they wanted to use the funds,” Naumann said.
Both Harold and Ardith were voracious readers, according to Busch. “Every week there was a large stack of books on each of their chair side tables. They loved to read,” Naumann said. “Their books would come from the library. They would also go to sales and buy a bunch of books there. Reading was a favorite pasttime.”
Harold was born in Sioux Valley Township on June 28, 1921. His family moved to Brewster, MN, when we was two years old. Ardith was born in Bertha, MN on September 7, 1926. She and Harold married on October 5, 1944. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Brewster, Round Lake, and Fulda. They moved into Fulda in 1979 and were actively involved in many organizations including the First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, and the Fulda Reading Club and Friends of the Library.
“Dad was always involved in a variety things,” Naumann commented. “He was a Boy Scout leader and a firearms safety instructor. He also served with the Minnesota State Guard, and was on the Fulda City Council. He and Mom both served as elders at First Presbyterian Church. Mom was president of the Women’s Association and taught Sunday School and release time classes. She belonged to TOPS. They enjoyed being actively involved in the communities that they lived in.”
Five children were born to Harold and Ardith: Doug, Carol, Ed, Bill and Cheryl (deceased). Doug and his wife, Sandy, live in Jackson, Minnesota. They have one son, Kurt. Doug works in Worthington at Racom. Carol married Steve Naumann and they live near Dundee, MN. They are the parents of Matt and Breanne. Carol taught at Fulda Elementary School for 32 years. Ed and his wife, Suzann, live in Brewster, MN. They have one daughter, Lindsay. Ed is employed with Nobles County Highway Department. Bill is married to Chris. The couple lives at Hurricane, Utah. They have four children: Patrick, Dennis, Joe and Katie.
Staff at Fulda Memorial Library will be glad to share the titles of the childrens and adult books in the Busch donation collection...just ask.
