Murray County Commissioners - Southwest Initaiative Foundation annual report

Scott Rall, addressed the Murray County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday speaking of the Lessard/Sams Outdoor Heritage Council (LSOHC) funding. He was concerned that much of the funding from the lottery is going to other entities that were not environmental in nature as was intended. The sportsmen are not happy with the way lottery money is spent, he said. LSHOC’s goal is to protect and restore prairie wetlands. Two percent of the land in Murray County is in a wetland managed area or 9,086 acres in 49 WMAs.

Jim Jens submitted the low quote for the labor on renovating the floor in Heritage Hall and Southwest Minnesota Concrete the low quote for the concrete.

Bonnie Christiansen, Karen Tommeraasen, and Lila Anderson reported a grant of $3,500 to the food shelf for children. The grant will be used to supply grocery bags with healthy snacks and fruits and vegetables once a month for those that qualify. They reported one in eight children in Minnesota are at risk for hunger. Murray County served 94 children ages 0-17 during the month of May and 158 in June.

Liz Maires, development officer, and Garrett Backes, development and communications specialist, gave the annual report of the Southwest Initiative Foundation. With net assests of $50.8 million SWIF is able to fund a variety of projets in the area. Strategic plans include Economic advancement - entrepreneurship initiative, and Loan programs. Projects in Murray County are monthly entrepreneur meetings in Slayton for businesses. Community and Leadership Development such as Early Childhood Initiative and First Responders training for working with children in traumatic situations.

SWIF continues to work with business leaders to build the region’s capacity for social and economic success.

SWIF has more than 90 fund partnerships throughout the regions. Nearly $6.4 million has been raised by local funds and more than $3.3 million of those dollars are endowed. More than $2.1 million has been granted to local projects through those funds, Maiers reported.

Murray County Central Rebel Foundation has a permanent endowment to enhance curriculum within the school district, as well as a non-endowed fund that might be used for facilities in the future. Murray County Early Childhood Fund was granted $11,000 for 2010 programming and the coordinator’s stipend. Three scholarships were awarded to youth in FFA and Veldspar donated paint for the Dinehart/Holt house.
