It’s the good old summertime and thoughts naturally turn to weddings and special events. Folks at the historic Dinehart/Holt House will be embracing this timeless tradition with an exhibit featuring weddings gowns from yesterday and today in an interactive event that will run through the days of the Murray County fair this year.
Murray County Museum Director Diane Clercx and her staff at the museum are busying themselves with wedding arrangements, much like a bridal flurry of preparations as the day draws near. The museum has mailed invitations to countless local and area dignitaries, asking them to provide, on temporary loan, their wedding attire for display during the four-day event in what will truly be likened as the county’s own wedding time capsule.
“We have sent invitations to commissioner’s wives, mayors of the county’s cities, and past and present politicians,” Clercx relates. Among others, the museum expects to acquire on temporary loan the dress worn by the wife of Slayton’s own Vin Weber at their wedding.
Featured will be dresses that are owned by the museum dating back to 1900-1906. In addition, there will be newer fashions mixed in with those, Clercx explains. “We have 30 dresses now and we’re shooting for 50.”
In planning the event, the staff composed a list of some of the county’s influential people throughout the years and invited them to share their nuptial attire.
“From casual to elegant, to tropical, we will have it all,” she touts, including a gown worn recently in the Governor’s mansion when the marriage was presided over by the state’s first lady, the honorable Mary Pawlenty, who was a former District Court judge. Clercx will also share her very own Hawaiian flavored wedding dress that she purchased locally at the Fashion Nook and wore at her marriage to Rick in 1986. Incidentally, she shares, the wedding was presided over by newly-ordained-that-very-morning, Reverend Kerry Boese, and included genuine Hawaiian floral leis. Clercx will also provide her own grandmother’s dress, hand made and intricately beaded in 1922, as well as daughter Rachel’s exquisitely beaded and unique dress from 2006.
There will be “Mother of the Bride” and a few bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, and in addition, some “going away” honeymoon selections. All of the wedding attire will be displayed throughout the turn of the century historic house. Serving as hosts will be costumed guides throughout the house.
To create a true wedding festival, each day will feature a different local cake decorator who will provide delectable wedding fare for the guests. Mints, nuts, cake and punch will be available for those attending the exhibit. Also, four local photographers will be on hand to showcase their craft. VIP Floral will provide a decorative flair to add to the festivities.
The wedding festival at the Dinehart/Holt house will truly bring life to the elegant, historic home as guests are invited to browse the house’s two floors, garnering a glimpse into the past. The display will be open from 1:00-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, August 18, through Saturday, the 21st.
