Rebels host MCC Cross Country Invitational

October 4, 2012

By: Sean Solheim
The MCC cross country team hosted their meet during Homecoming this past week with a number of teams on hand to compete. On a perfect night for running, the Rebels were able to show great times on their home course.

For the girls varsity race, it was Luverne that had the edge. When all the runners were coming down the fairway of hole three at the Slayton Country Club towards the finish line, Luverne had four runners in the top ten and that helped them go on to win the team title for the invitational. For the Rebels, the first runner to cross the finish line was Melissa Gehl. She came sprinting across the finish line with some room to spare over the runner behind her. She was able to finish in 16th place and had a time of 18:04. Maddie Dibble had a great finish for the Rebels as she was able to fight her way to a 22nd place finish. She was clocked at a time of 18:38. Sariah Cheadle came in a little while later in 24th place. Between that and Dibble, who placed 22nd, there was about a 20 second gap. Cheadle’s time was 18:57. Breanna Breberg locked herself into the 35th spot with a time of 20:29 on the home course while Jamie Schnoor finished 43rd and had a time of 22:13.

As a team, Luverne took the title with 32 points. MCC finished 6th with 117.

The Boys varsity race featured some great placing and times for the Rebels as well. In the top ten, however, the Worthington Trojans had three runners there, including Ethan Spittle who went on to win the invitational with a time of 17:40.

The first runner to finish for MCC was Andy Garza. He was able to comfortably finish in 18th place and he was also clocked at a time of 19:22. Senior Aaron Boock placed 23rd in the race and he had himself a time of 20:05 in the 5K race. Jack Erickson placed 26th for MCC with a comfortable time of 20:24 while Chris Ellens finished in 36th. His time was 21:35. Nathan Beech came sprinting down the fairway and crossed the finish line just five seconds after Ellens in 37th place. Markus Drealan placed 40th with a time of 22:02 while Andrew Appel finished 43rd and had a time of 22:39.

As a team, the Rebels finished fifth with 129 points while Worthington went on to win the Invitational with 28 total team points.

MCC’s next meet is in Olivia on Thursday, October 4th.
