Biography information supplied by Fulda High School Coaches Greg Slaathaug, Colby Pack, and Steve Kellen.
With only three weeks and counting left before the Coaches' vs. Parkinson's fundraiser on Saturday, December 15th, the excitement is mounting...not only in Fulda but in places far from this rural city.
On that day there will be a girl-boy double header played against Luverne with the girls' game set to begin at 6 p.m. in the Fulda High School gymnasium.
The Fulda Girls and Boys Basketball coaches are hosting the Coaches' vs. Parkinson's fundraiser as a tribute to long-time teacher and Coach Harvey Carroll, and also as a benefit for all area residents who suffer from Parkinson's Disease. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the National Parkinson Foundation Minnesota.
The fundraiser will include a silent auction, a raffle, and a free-will supper. Thanks to many donations, there are a large number of items that will be on the silent auction and included in the raffle. These items will be available for viewing at the four home games preceding the fundraiser. Those dates are: November 24th, and December 7 and 13th for the girls' Basketball team and December 11th for the boys team.
The free-will offering supper menu will consist of pulled pork, chips, a bar, and beverage. Supper will be served beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The Coaches vs. Parkinson's Fundraiser idea was born as the local girls and boys basketball coaches were thinking of a way to aid those in the Fulda community who suffer with Parkinson's disease.
Prominent in their minds are the many struggles that former FHS Coach Harvey Carroll has suffered since being diagnosed with Parkinson's more than eight years ago.
Carroll is a native of Willow Lake, South Dakota. He is the youngest of 7 boys. He was raised by his mother, Lillian, and six older brothers after the death of his father when Harvey was 4 years old.
He graduated from Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota.
Carroll began his teaching and coaching career from 1975-1980 in Garretson, South Dakota where he taught 5th grade and coached varsity girls basketball, varsity boys basketball, junior high basketball, and summer baseball.
From 1980 to 2007 Caroll taught 6th grade and coached in Fulda. He was the assistant boys basketball coach for 22 years and the head coach for 4 years and also served as the 9th grade coach. Carroll coached track and was the co-head girls coach for 2 years and served as an assistant for many years. He also served as a varsity assistant football coach along with coaching the 9th and 10th grade team. Carroll also helped run the elementary basketball program in Fulda for many years. During the summer, he worked and coached with the Fulda Summer Recreation Program and painted with Erv Brinkman and the summer crew. He also served as a volleyball official for 10 years.
In 1995 Carroll was honored by the Minnesota Basketball Coach's Association as the Assistant Coach of the Year in Class A. In 2007, he was honored as Section 3A Assistant Track Coach of the Year.
In his free time Carroll enjoyed hunting, golfing, volunteer work at the golf course, fishing, gardening, playing cards, playing dominos, having coffee/breakfast/shaking dice with the guys downtown in the morning and riding bike and spending time with his two grandchildren.
Carroll's wife, Sharon, teaches in the Fulda School District. The couple have three children: Chad (Julie) and their two children; Chaden and Keala Benson MN; Brad in Lewisville, Texas; and Travis in Marshall, MN.
Carroll helped in the development of many youth in Fulda. He has been described as someone who taught his players the meaning of respect, along with the definition of responsibility in the classroom and on the playing field. During his teaching and coaching career, and after he concluded working with the school district, Carroll has received tremendous support from numerous people within the community.
A listing of the raffle and silent auction items follows: Many more items are being received each day. Watch for a complete listing in a future issue of the Fulda Free Press. If people want to bid on certain items and cannot make it to the games, they can turn bids in to colby.pack@fps.mntm.org.
