Fulda FFA Hunger Games

December 14, 2012

Fulda FFA members are kicking off its annual Food Drive! This year the National FFA has challenged local chapters to take on hunger in their own communities.

In the United States, a land of plenty, one in six Americans will experience food insecurity some time during the coming year.

Today, millions of Americans struggle with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.

National FFA’s Feeding the World—Starting at Home initiative is a compelling educational movement to help students understand the issues and effects of hunger. Students then take action to support the human right to safe, affordable, abundant and nutritious food as a means of reducing hunger at home and abroad, starting with a look at the United States.

The first step is to educate teachers and students about domestic and global food insecurity. The second is to organize hunger relief efforts that give FFA members opportunities to apply what they have learned to fight hunger and promote food security for all.

This year's food drive will be called “The Battle Hunger Games”, and the event will be based loosely on the popular book and movie The Hunger Games.

Beginning Tuesday through Thursday, December 11-13th, Greenhand FFA members will collect donations during their lunch hour at Fulda High School. Students and staff members can donate $1 or a canned or boxed good to get their name in a giant glass bowl, or purchase multiple entries, based on how much they want to donate. Each day on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, ten students/staff members names will be drawn and announced (30 total) on the FHS intercom system. If a student’s name is drawn more than once, they will have the option of selecting a competitor from their 5th hour class to play with them. Both students and staff are encouraged to participate!

Students and staff who are chosen will participate in “The Battle Hunger Games Dodgeball Event” which will held on Friday, December 14th, beginning at 12:33 p.m. The game will not be an ordinary Dodgeball game as the gym will resemble the arena from The Hunger Games book. There will be a few surprises in store for the competitors. The last student or staff member standing will receive a pizza party for their 5th hour class.

After the game, Greenhand FFA Members hope to present a check to Fulda’s Christmas Food Drive (the same food drive the Fulda FCCLA is raising donations towards). They will also acknowledge area businesses who contributed or supported the FFA members in raising funds. Fulda FFA members are working diligently to keep with the theme of the food drive, but also to be mindful of the cause that they are supporting.

Any community member who would like to contribute to this event may contact Fulda FFA Advisor Kelsey Carlson at kelsey.carlson@fps.mntm.org.
