January 4, 2012

Agoud Lund, wife of Daniel Lund, speaks about her life's journey as a Sudanese refuge and the journey that brought her to the United States of America.

The Fulda School Board met for election of officers and to hire a new Community Ed Director.

The Fulda Police Department has reported vandalism to the Veterans Memorial Park down by the lake. This is the second known incident at the park.

With the mild weather school age children have been enjoying the great out doors with a game of ice hockey on the lake.

Citizens of Tomorrow include Molly Clarke, Rylan and Carson Klein, and Gary and Samantha Bultmann.



January 11, 2012

The City of Fulda has paid $1,190 in fines that were cited by OSHA including; fuel barrel located indoors, no safety barriers around barrel, smoking permitted in flammable liquids storage area, debris blocking electrical panel and non-compliant flammable liquid containers.

The City Council received a $550 donation from Doug Eichten for annual maintenance at Eichten Park on behalf of his father.

Shannon Fischer is beginning a new Zumba class in Fulda.

Jessica Mitchell is the new Community Education Coordinator/Pool Manager.

With the cold weather finally arriving the City of Fulda reported a water-main break on Tuesday on Mill Street.

Kelsey Guennigesman has been hired to help provide vital ultra sound services at the Murray County Medical Center.

January 18, 2012

The Fulda Raider Marching Band will proudly be carrying a new banner as they participate in upcoming parades. The new banner was donated to the band by Trudy Holinka in memory of her husband Chuck.

The Fulda Police Department has reported a break-in at the Fulda Developmental Achievement Center the evening of Thursday, January 5th. The back door was broke in to and left open.

The 71 Club near Windom has been purchased by Jerry and Shar Ebbers who have converted it into their new home.

A postage hike of 1¢ for mailing a letter will take place next week making the cost of a stamp 45¢. A postcard will go from 29¢ to 32¢.

New Camper Cabins offered at Lake Shetek State Park for family get-aways.

Prairie Star Ministries recently purchased the 120-year-old hotel building in Dundee.

Caryn and Dan Johnson are in the business of “Makin Scents” - that is making soy candles in a variety of aromas.

Fulda, and the surrounding community, finally got a taste of winter with low 30's for temperatures and several inches of snow.

The Fulda BPA chapter tested their skills at the Region Competition in Granite Falls on Friday.

The Murray County Commissioners scheduled the Regional Recycling information meeting for January 30th.

County Commissioners from 11 counties in southwest Minnesota met on January 30th to discuss building a regional single stream recycling facility.

The Kindergarten class at the Fulda Elementary School held a pajama party, which was earned by the students efforts in their studies.

The Fulda Raider Band is headed to the Calgary Stampede this summer.

Team Briana participated in the Mall Walk in Sioux Falls, SD on Saturday to help raise money for the Children's Care Hospital and School. The team consisted of Briana Wildfeuer and her friends and family.

The Fulda City Council held their regular meeting to appoint department heads. Also approved was a cost of living increase for city employees.

Tony Franceschi has a passion for creating flavorful cuisine and plans to share his talents at his newly acquired Chandler Valley Grill in Chandler, MN.

Iron Horse Chili Feed is scheduled for February 18th.

Farm, Home and Garden Show held in Fulda this past weekend.

The Fulda School Board has accepted the resignations of three teachers; Susan Olsem, Sharon Carroll, and Linda Beerman.

G.W. Doc Schwarz is selling his 52-year-old Snaro business to Brooks Johnson of Monticello, Minnesota.

Glen and Kay Gunderman to celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss with open house on February 18th.

100 years of marriage celebrated in Hawaii as Glen and Kay Gunderman and Leona and Arvin Dierks travel together to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversaries.

A Union Pacific train was traveling southwest toward the city of Brewster when approximately 20 cars derailed just southwest of County Road 20 along Highway 60. The cause of the derailment is being investigated by officials from Union Pacific.

Masonic Lodge donation ensures purchase of special education equipment for the Elementary school. The money will be used to help purchase the electronic braille reader and tactile graphics embosser needed.

Randi Tiesler and Brandi Spies will travel to St. Cloud to compete in the State Free Throw Competition. Each qualified in their age group.

Iron Horse Chili Cookoff held on Saturday with 1st place honors going to Roxie and Bud Kooiman

Senator Doug Magnus announced that he will not be running for re-election to the State Senate District 22 for another term.

The Fulda Lake Reclamation project is named as finalist in the Natural Resource Protection and Restoration Category of the 2012 Environmental Initiative Awards.

Abigail Joy, 17, shared her Diabetic Alert Dog, Koda, with Fulda Elementary School first graders on Thursday morning of last week.

The Fulda Fire Department took part in a controlled burn training session on Saturday at the former Miloma AgriService Elevator along Highway 60. A total of 13 fire departments from around the area participated in the burn.

The Heritage Country Show will be held April 1.

Kamryn Weg was just one of the future preschool students who attended the open house at the Fulda Elementary School on Friday morning.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda will install a new Pastor on Sunday afternoon. Pastor Shawn Ethridge and his family, wife, Davina, and children Rachel, Caleb, Hannah and Ruth have already moved into the parsonage near the church.

Roxanne (Gerdes) Kremer has been named Worthington Teacher of the Year.

Fulda School Board approves summer employees for various jobs; Randy Kremer, Dean McNeal, Allison Winter, Jessica Hogan, Alex Hein, Syd Strom, Todd Peterson, and Sabrina Raddle.

Children of all ages enjoyed the Easter egg hunt and crafts provided at Maple Lawn Nursing Home on Saturday.

Linda and Gerald Fuerstenberg will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary with a private family gathering.

Fulda boys and girls golf teams opened the season with a meet in Slayton. On the girls side, Fulda came away with a victory while the boys finished 2nd. Competing in the triangular were teams from MCC and WWG.

The Murray County Central Early Bird track and field meet was held on Tuesday in Slayton with Fulda coming home in 3rd place.

Kevin Adolph, Asmus Farm Supply, Inc., presented Suzanne Pagel, a member of the Fulda High School FFA with an FFA Blue Jacket and a check for $500 for the chapter.

The Murray County Board of Commissioners approved conditional use permits at their meeting on April 3rd.

Maple Lawn Nursing Home installs a new electronic health record system making all patient information easily accessible.

Improvements at the Fulda Pool are on track with 65 gallons of paint for the interior of the facility expected to be delivered this week.

Long standing newspaper editor, Will Beers passed away on May 5th. Mr. Beers was the owner/editor of the Wheel/Herald.

Dwain and Marlys Evers to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Shirley Fischer honored as Resident of the Month at Maple Lawn Nursing Home.

Murray County Medical Center celebrates their humble heroes; the nursing staff who serve with dedication to their profession.

Military services at all four cemeteries will take place prior to the Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 28, 2012.

A Bike Ride will be added as a new event in this year’s Fulda Wood Duck celebration.

Linda Beerman is retiring after 30 years of teaching in the Fulda School District. Mrs. Beerman has taught preschool, second grade, fourth grade, sixth grade, third grade and finally first grade during her years with Fulda.

The Fulda Swim and Fitness is receiving an upgrade which includes a new chair lift.

Rodney Wahl has stepped down as Fulda American Legion Post #318 Commander. The new commander is James Troje of Fulda.

Stephanie Klein and Jason Schettler have announced their engagement. A July 14 wedding is planned.

The Fulda girls golf team earned Red Rock Conference Championship.

Earning All-Conference in golf were Brittany Leinen, Sarah Strenge, Tessa Kramer, Maddy Westra, Katie Reynolds and Mic Holinka.

The Fulda Elementary School held its talent show this week.

Awards Day was held at the Fulda High School.

The Fulda High school Music Department held its annual Pops Concert.

National EMS week celebrated.

46 students crossed the stage at the Fulda High School during the 2012 graduation ceremony held on Friday evening.

Sue Olsem retires from teaching after 35 years with the school district.

Memorial Day observed with a parade, flowers on the water, and a program at the school.

Poppy Poster Contest winners were announced as 1st place Frances Piper, 2nd place Zach Larson and 3rd place Tucker Engelkes.

St. Paul’s Lutheran School held its Kindergarten and 8th grade graduations.

Fulda High School Advanced Woods Class completed their canoe project by placing it in the lake.

Fulda Elementary third graders held their Readers Theatre.

Fourth grade students shared what they learned about various states with a Social Studies State Fair.

Wacky Olympics held at the Fulda Elementary School.

Raider girls golf team earned Sub-section golf championship and will advance to the Section Tournament.

Three boy golfers will advance to section play; Mitch Baumhoefner, Todd Peterson and Mic Holinka.

June 6, 2012

Fulda City Council approves a motion to refill the Swim and Fitness pool at no charge.

Karen Clausen has been hired as the new cook for the Fulda Senior Dining facility.

Todd Peterson and Tessa Kramer have advanced to state competition in golf. Silvia Zanini has advanced in track.

Girls Golf Team took Runner-up in the Section meet.

Eldon Larson earned a gold medal in the 65-69 age group in the Archery Division of the Minnesota Senior Games on Sunday at Mankato, MN.

The Garden Angels have been at work again at the Maple Lawn Nursing Home. They have planted a new Hydrangea Tree and added a water ball fountain to the garden there.

Fulda Wood Duck Festival has another new event this year; a softball tournament.

Tammy Peterson is taking part in the Summer School Abroad program offered through the Global Education Office at Concordia.

The local youth track meet will take place on June 9th.

Ross Behrends and Jan Voit of the Heron Lake Watershed District accepted an Environmental Initiative Award in the Natural Resources Protection and Restoration category. The award was won for the work done on Fulda’s first and second lakes.



June 13, 2012

The Fulda Wood Duck Festival will be held this weekend with members of the Fulda Giants teams of old being honored as Grand Marshals.

Silvia Zanini, an exchange student from Italy at the Fulda High School, took the State Champion Title in the discus at the Minnesota State Track and Field meet.

Three Fulda men are vying for the District 5 Commissioner seat being vacated by William Sauer. They include Tim Strenge, Dave Thiner and Roger Zins.

The Fulda Board of Education accepted bids for new fencing near the parking lot and A/C for the computer room.

The Fulda High School won the Judges’ Choice Award in the National Teen Safe Driving Contest- Act Out Loud.

A track and field meet was held in Fulda on Saturday, June 9th for all ages.

The 2012 Fulda Wood Duck Festival was a great success as young and old alike enjoyed the weekend filled with rides, parades, fireworks and more.

First ever Bike Ride held in conjunction with the festival.

Nobles County Relay for Life scheduled for Friday night in Worthington.

Buster the Magical Clown visited Fulda this week with magic tricks and books to read.
