Steve Magnus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9017 Commander, and Sophia Hein, Auxiliary President, attended the Third District Meeting that was held at the Minnesota Veterans Home, Luverne, MN, on January 6th.
Also in attendance at this meeting were Leslie Kass, Third District Commander and Debbie Tweet, Department President.
During the meeting, a special memorial service was held for deceased VFW Post and Auxiliary members including VFW Post 9017 member George Isder and VFW Post 9017 Auxiliary members Etheleen Busch and Delores Welling.
The VFW Post 9017 Auxiliary received a check for $25.00 from the VFW District for being at 100 percent of their membership goal by November 1, 2012. A check from the VFW Department in the amount of $15.00 had previously been received by the Auxiliary.
Membership goals were discussed as some VFW Auxiliaries obtained 100 percent of their membership goal, but could not fill officer positions which resulted in the loss of those auxiliary charters.
Also mentioned at the meeting was the fact that veterans are in need of help from VFW Posts and Auxiliaries as Congress is reducing aid programs to veterans. Currently, there are 115,000 homeless single veterans and veterans with families, who sleep in shelters or boxes out on the street. It was noted that these veterans had homes and jobs but let both to fight for freedom for the citizens of the United States. Returning home with either mental health issues or physical injuries, some of these veterans have lost both their home and their family. The question was asked, “What are we, as American citizens, doing for the veterans as we sleep in our warm beds and comfortable homes?”
The VFW Post 9017 Auxiliary was very proud to learn that Cody Schei, a student at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, had earned the Third District’s vote as winner in the Patriot’s Pen/Voice of Democracy Essay Contest. Schei’s essay was one of 109 essays received by the Third District that addressed the question , “What I Would Tell American’s Founding Fathers.” Schei was presented with a $10.00 check from the Third District by VFW Post 9017 Auxiliary President Sophia Hein. |
