Joy in the Journey

February 28, 2013

by Linda Beerman
On my refrigerator I have a magnet that says, " When I say the word exercise, I wash my mouth out with chocolate". It was a gift from my daughter-in-law, Krista, and it's because she knows me well. Chocolate is almost another food group for me, and all of my family caters to my addiction with wonderful gifts of it. Reminders are all over my house in some form or another, from pillows to candles. Above our washing machine is a sign from my other daughter-in-law, Heather, which says, " Chocolate will make your clothes shrink". That brings me back to exercise!

During my teaching years at Fulda Elementary, I walked an average of nearly 10,000 steps a day. There are countless steps in that school, and bringing classes to P.E., music, lunch, and recess was good movement for me too. And I do love to walk, but since retirement I don't have that kind of bodily exertion in my every day activities. Walking is something I enjoy doing daily when the weather cooperates and it is not icy. Living on a gravel road is not too conducive to walking in the winter time either, so I decided I would come together with some other gals to get moving a little.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings in the Fulda Elementary gym several ladies meet for exercise and a time of fellowship with one another during that hour. They meet from 8:00 to 9:00 to help them feel better and get some needed movement. If you have any interest in joining us, please do! This group is promoted through Community Education, and costs one dollar and twenty-five cents for each session. You only pay on the mornings you show up and join in the fun.

Several years ago many of these ladies started out in the Fulda Pool doing water aerobics. Since the pool has temporarily closed, and while waiting for it to reopen, it was decided to keep on with regular times of exercise for those interested. They tried different places to do some low impact aerobics, but the gym turned out to be a great place for a fitness time together. After a short warm up, the hour is broken up into three kinds of motion. First we use a DVD to exercise both the upper and lower body for one "mile". Next we "walk" the gym, adding arm movements and some hopping, etc. Finally we use our hand held weights and do some upper body movements. Or some do this part without the weights. Your choice. In the cool down period, we walk a little more and do some final leg stretches.

These workouts are not high stress! We just are trying to "move more" for the betterment of our heart health, and all the other parts too. According to facts and information listed in health magazines, there are many benefits to regular exercise. It helps us have more energy and feel better overall. Working the body parts and toning the muscles are good things to aim for. Sometimes at home it is easy to skip an exercise time, but coming together with a group not only gives you a "place", but also gives you accountability with others who have the same needs. Don't worry about not being able to do all of the exercises at the get-go, just ease in and do what you can.

Most women are pretty unselfish by nature. If someone needs us, we usually find it hard to say no. We can look at it this way, if we get some regular exercise time in each week we will be in better shape and have more energy to help those needing us. Hey, we can find the time to brush our teeth, go to appointments, or watch our favorite T-V show, so I would encourage you to find some time to do something good for you too!

In closing, I would like to thank the people who are working hard to get the pool back up and running. Several of these same ladies who are in this workout group gave many hours of elbow grease to clean and paint at the pool, along with some of their husbands too. Thank you so much!! Many of us are impatiently waiting to get into the water aerobics again. It just plain feels good after doing it. And of course, just having the pool open for the kids and all of the community will be super. It has been missed by many for several reasons, and it is a good thing for Fulda to have!
