Fulda defeats RTR by 13
Worthington was the setting for the second round in the 3A Girls Subsection Basketball tournament. Fulda which was seeded in fourth place played the Knights from Russell Tyler Ruthton. Having defeated the Knights earlier in the year the Raiders were prepared to take them on again. The Raiders grabbed the tip-off but failed to score on their opening possession. The Knights didn’t have any better luck and Fulda headed back down the court and Rachel Cheadle went up to for the basket and was fouled. She was able to sink one of two and the Raiders took their first lead of the day.

Fulda continued to play strong defense and jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. Rachel Cheadle had a very impressive first half and scored 15 of her game high 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds during the game. Melissa Gehl also displayed excellent defense and contributed 7 of her ten points in the first half. Fulda’s largest lead in the half came following a basket and a free throw by Laura Williams (3 pts) and a three point shot from Courtney Tiesler ( 9 pts), Fulda up 33-23. The Raiders went into the locker room with a seven point advantage 33-26.

To start the second half, Fulda’s Brittney Hermeling hit two 3 pointers to extend their lead to 39-26 with sixteen minutes left in the contest. Rachel Cheadle and Melissa Gehl connected on back to back baskets and the Raiders never let up. The Knights tired to get things rolling but the Raiders fought right back. B Hermeling (15 points and 14 rebounds) would find herself at the free throw line and nailed six buckets in a row and Fulda led by 24 points at 52-28. The Knights had one last surge but it wasn’t enough. Fulda was victorious by the score of 70-57. Others contributing to their success were Sariah Cheadle ( 7 points) and Amanda Schumacher (3 pts). The Raiders will meet up with the Rabbits from Wabasso on Tuesday night in Worthington at 6:00 pm.
