Laura Williams was named the 2013 National FFA Proficiency Award winner in Vegetable Production at the National FFA Convention held in Louisville, Kentucky. Williams, a 2013 FHS graduate, is the daughter of Janna and Kerry Williams of Brewster, MN.

The FFA Agricultural Proficiency Awards Program rewards FFA members at the local, regional, state and national levels for exceptional accomplishments and experience in a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Program. An SAE is a year-round program that are planned, practical activities conducted outside of class time that help develop and apply agricultural knowledge and skills learned inside the classroom.

Williams, a member of the Fulda FFA Chapter, became eligible for the national award after winning the Minnesota FFA competition earlier this year. Williams was named a national finalist in August, one of only four people chosen to compete for this award at the 2013 National FFA Convention.

The family of Laura Williams has been actively involved in fruit and vegetable production for almost 20 years. At age 5, she began helping make sales at the local farmers market. By age 11, Williams had taken over all farmers market sales. Of the family’s operation, she manages about 3 acres independently and grows cucumbers, green beans and tomatoes. She also manages planting in the greenhouse and expands their customer base and while growing sales.

In recognition of being a finalist Williams received a plaque and $500, in addition she received an additional plaque and $500 during the awards ceremony for being named the National winner.

Williams is supported by parents Janna and Kerry and FFA advisors Michael Pagel and Kelsey Klassen. This award is sponsored by Tractor Supply Company and Wilbur-Ellis Company.

In addition to the National Proficiency Award, Laura was named a winner of the National FFA Organization Travel Seminar to Costa Rica. This June 2014 seminar empowers FFA leaders by providing them with a global perspective. Through this experience, participants gain knowledge by visiting farms and agribusinesses.
