Fulda/MCC Warriors participate in 4th annual Redwood River Riot

The Fulda/Murray County Central Warrior wrestling team spent their weekend in Redwood Falls for the fourth annual Redwood River Riot wrestling tournament. Twenty-nine teams from all over traveled to Redwood Falls to compete in the tournament, which made the competition very tough for most wrestlers, including the Warriors.

Because of the amount of wrestlers there were in the tournament, the competition for everyone was at an all time high, which made some runs in the tournament short lived. Jon Gehl was able to start off his bracket strong in the 113 pound class. There, he earned a pin right away in the first period over Alex Oase from St. Paul Humboldt. In the second round, Gehl was very evenly matched with Abdi Ali from Minneapolis South and it came down to the wire. Gehl, however, got the short end of the scoreboard and fell by decision, 4-2. Angel Zamarripa stood in Gehlís way of moving up in the wrestle back brackets, but unfortunately for him, thatís where he ended as Zamarripa earned the pin on Gehl in 1:58.

Ben Blanchette was the only Warrior wrestler to place in the tournament and he did so in the 126 pound class. To get there, he started his run with a tecnical fall victory over Palmer Peterson from NRHEG, 15-0 and followed that performance up with a 6-3 decision over Colten Specht from Quad County. Blanchette continued to dominate on the mat even into the semi finals round where Jordan Bothun from Tri City United fell by technical fall to Blanchette, 19-3. In the finals, Blanchette matched up with a familiar opponent, which was Anthony Luft from Worthington. The two battled hard in the first period, but early on in the second, Luft had Blanchette on his back and earned the pin to secure the championship in the 126 pound class.

For the rest of the Warriors, only a couple wrestlers earned a couple wins in their respective brackets, other wise the rest of them bowed out of the tournament within their first couple match ups. Clayton Hartle was one of those where after he fell in his first match, he came back to take a 7-3 decision over Joe Dominguez from St. James. However, he fell a short time later to Donny Bothun from Tri City United by decision, 4-3. Dylan Nelson was the other wrestler to add a couple wins. After he got pinned in the first minute of his match against Tim Krueger from Redwood Valley in the 182 pound class, Nelson battled against Chris Johnson from St. James and earned a pin himself in 33 seconds. Later, Nelson matched up with Jordan Houkos from Sartell and he wasted no time again in moving on with another pin in 1:22. However, his run ended there as Anthony Quigley from Tri City United pinned Nelson in 2:57.

The Warriors have some time off before wrestling again. They will be back in action on the 7th of January where they will compete in Marshall.
