“Don’t Play Tag With Germs. You May Be It!” was the Fulda High School junior high FCCLA project completed by the team of McKenzie Evers and Evany Luna which recently earned a runner-up award for the Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It’s a SNAP National Awards Program.

By receiving the award, Evers and Luna will receive Certificates of Achievement for their project as well as $250.00 for their FCCLA Chapter.

For their Germs and Hand Washing Project, Evers and Luna shared vital information with Fulda Elementary School students in grades 1 through 6 about the importance of thorough hand washing. “We went to the gymnasium at Fulda Elementary School and talked with the students during their physical education class periods,” Luna explained. “We know how important it is that everyone understands about germs and that the best way to avoid illness is through practicing good hand washing techniques.”

“Because we wanted an interactive time with the students, we played tag with some of the grades,” Evers stated. “They had cards in their pockets that we had made that identified them as a germ, or said 'I stayed home because I was sick'. When the game was over we identified the germs that had been tagged by the students.”

Included in the interactive games was an experiment using a white teddy bear and a black light. The teddy bear was passed from person to person. Under the black light, it revealed more and more germ collection.

The girls also gave the Fulda Elementary School and Fulda High School staff a quiz about handwashing. The adults average of 63% showed that they also need to be updated on handwashing and transference of germs.

A PowerPoint presentation by Luna and Evers was submitted by Fulda FCCLA Chapter Advisor, Marcine Elder, to the American Cleaning Institute for the Healthy Schools, Healthy People, It’s a SNAP National Awards compeitition. Only three awards were given: one grand prize, and two runner-up awards.

As excited as Evers and Luna are about receiving this national recognition, they do want to remind people that germs cannot be seen so everyone needs to remember the correct method to wash one's hands. First, wet the hands, apply antibacterial soap, wash for 20 seconds, rinse and dry with paper towel. Slides on the large hall monitor in the high school and on the local cable TV help keep others informed. Remember, you too can fight the flu with good handwashing!
