Hospitals resume elective surgeries

Some hospitals have resumed elective surgeries after postpone them due to the pandemic. Governor Walz has now allowed these facilities to do procedures dependent upon their PPE supply.

Cancelled surgeries and procedures have left many patients wondering when their appointment might be rescheduled.

Of course, just as MCMC was starting to see their financial picture starting to brighten, the virus hit the area and was forced to basically close down that part of the facility. Gillogy says volumes are off at least 50% from where they should be. This put a real burden on the finances of the already struggling hospital Fortunately the clinic side remained quite busy so there was at least some income coming in.

Dale Gillogly, interim CEO for MCMC, stated the facility was able to obtain a PPP loan allowing all staff to return to their full work schedule as of Monday, May 11th.

He added, although MCMC is now able to ramp up for elective procedures, he cautioned this will be paced by the supply of PPE and the ability to test patients for COVID-19. “We are doing a few urgent surgeries and beginning the process of performing elective procedures as well as continuing to test patients for the virus.”
