The Seven Second Stretch – PART 1 By Curt Hendel

Following is a fictional original story by Curt Hendel.  We will be running a chapter a week through the summer for your reading pleasure.

“GRENADE!”

That word was almost the last one that any of the four men in the mortar pit would have wanted to hear.  Even more so in the midst of a fierce battle for yet another piece of indiscriminate property that would not be remembered after this God forsaken war was finally over.

Private First Class Billy Oxendine didn’t know who had been the first to see the black grenade land in the middle of the pit where four friends were fighting the enemy to the death.  It was surreal because the enemy should have never been in close enough to throw that damned thing at them in the first place.  Somebody obviously slipped through the line and wanted their mortar shut down.  The second the word left the Marine’s mouth that screamed it all noise of the battle suddenly went quiet.  Now was the moment of destiny for four battle hardened friends and comrades.  What would happen in the next 2.4 seconds would affect each of them for the rest of their lives, if any of them actually lived.
